It’s pretty amazing to think about what fighter planes were a hundred years ago during World War I evolving to the sleek and beautiful supersonic machines that we have today. Just as amazing as how much has changed is how much has stayed the same.
While technology has changed pretty radically in the last 100 years (especially the last 50), nature of combat missions hasn’t really changed at all. To put it simply, just about every mission can be summarized as follows:
- Fight your way to the target.
- Drop your bombs.
- Fight your way home.
The rest is just details.
Armed with the appropriate knowledge, one of the keys to properly planning a mission over enemy territory is to focus on the target and plan the mission backward. In other words, I usually prioritized my combat planning around the reason I was going into harm’s way in the first place: to blow up the target (whether it was an enemy airfield, building, or airplane). It wouldn’t make any sense to get airborne, shoot down a few Migs, and dodge some SAMs (surface-to-air missiles) just for the sheer thrill value (although I admit that it does sound fun.)
“Starting at the target” means that you should take a good look at the target’s strengths and weaknesses. The process involves planning which ordinance would have the best effect on the target, investigating the best axis from which to attack, and planning the best flight formation to accomplish the task. Only when that is complete did I plan the rest of the flight.
You will be involved in the very same process in your own career as a fighter pilot, but before that happens, you HAVE to get started on planning your life and your career as a future fighter pilot the same way. You must acquire the best and most complete source of information possible to reach your goal, take a good look at the strengths and weaknesses of each route to becoming a fighter pilot, and match them against your own by deciding which service and commissioning program is right for you.
That is where the Afterburner Club comes in. We have the most complete and concise source of information on the services that fly jets, the commissioning programs each of them use, and the qualifications that each service looks for when choosing their pilot candidates.
There is going to be quite a bit of competition for that jet slot you want regardless of which path you choose, so it behooves you to know exactly what you’re going to be up against when you go up in front of a selection board, go through boot camp, and flight training.
If you’re looking for that edge that will give you the leg up to blow away the competition for your particular career goals, then you will NEED what the Afterburner Club offers and the information in the Fighter Pilot Power Pack!
