You already know that one of the biggest reasons that physical requirements are so important in your quest to become a fighter pilot is because of the high G-forces that you subject yourself to when flying high speed air combat maneuvers. If you’ve ever ridden the “Gravitron” at the carnival, you already have a good idea of what it feels like. You’re pinned to the flat mat, you feel like you’re laying down when you’re really sideways (which can be disorienting in itself), and you can hardly move!
Now imagine trying to fly an airplane and fight against an enemy plane that is just as fast, probably as sophisticated, and whose pilot is just as smart as you are!
Believe it or not, some people are thinking that with new weapons systems on the horizon that allow engagement beyond visual range (BVR) that the need for high-G tolerences will be less important.
WRONG!
Our nation’s enemy’s systems are improving all of the time too. High-G training in only going to become even more important as new weapons systems with even higher performance capabilities come into play.
So it’s important that you start your physical training NOW!
You can’t afford to wait until boot camp. If you’re not already playing sports for your school or in another good solid physical training regimen such as gymnastics or martial arts, it’s a good idea to get into one. The training and discipline that these activities provide are essential to being able to fly fighters effectively. As a high school and college athlete who went through the program, I can tell you that the first ones to wash out were the ones who were of the ‘brains over brawn’ mentality. Brains are important of course, but you need the physical tolerance to back it up.
It’s up to you to get the right information on physical requirements and training programs for the service you want to join and to implement that information in the gym, And it’s critical that you get started right now to have that competitive edge, both for the selection board and against a real enemy.
