As many of our current Afterburner Club members are implementing their way into the cockpits of their dream jets, we see too many other people in what could be their succeeding boot camp and flight school classes moping around, thinking “What’s the point? In the future, it’ll all be UAV’s anyway.”
On the contrary, opportunities for manned fighter planes are going to be- almost literally- out of this world! Sixth-generation fighters will have increased autonomy, yes, but there are NO PLANS AT ALL to phase out the role of the fighter pilot. And these planes will also have hypersonic weapons and “smart skins.” What are smart skins? Having sensors built into the sides of the aircraft itself. It may sound like science fiction right now, but that’s what’s coming up, both for manned and unmanned future combat aircraft.

Developments in how much further and faster we can deliver strikes to an enemy have been a part of the history of warfare since practically the dawn of man! In the case of aerial combat, very generation has had a longer reach and a faster punch than the last, from biplanes to monoplanes to jets to supersonic jets…all the way to today’s modern aircraft which can destroy are target before you- the pilot- can even SEE it!
Throughout your ENTIRE career in the U.S. military, there will be a need for people to manage the flying machines that serve as the “tip of the spear” for our fighting forces, and no matter how sophisticated and autonomous things get, there will ALWAYS be a need for them to manage it from on board the aircraft.
