With the talk lately in the news about Syria and North Korea, it’s a pretty good time to talk about a little thing we do in the military called Power Projection.
Power Projection is, to put simply and I quote, “the ability to apply all or some of [a nation’s] elements of national power – political, economic, informational, or military – to rapidly and effectively deploy and sustain forces in and from multiple dispersed locations to respond to crises, to contribute to deterrence, and to enhance regional stability.”
What that means is if we get an inkling of somebody wanting to do our nation’s citizens harm, then we deploy and show them that they had better not mess with us!
It may sound like an intimidation tactic, but when you’re dealing with somebody who thinks that they can intimidate you, then projecting power, or the ability to defend yourself and give even BETTER than you get will often get a bully to back down.
Some people think that Power Projection is a “bully” mentality and could start a war, but the truth is Power Projection has SAVED us from having to go to war many times throughout history, especially in the last 40 years.
If you’re having a situation where you feel like somebody is pushing you around, you can’t just let it continue. If you do, then people will just be pushing you around for the rest of your life. Power Projection in your own personal life does not necessarily mean that you have to threaten them back though. Look back up to the above definition of Power Projection. It’s about using EVERY means at your disposal, be they physical, mental, or social or even economic to show that you you don’t have to take any flak from anybody!
Informational means are also important too, especially when you are trying to project yourself to others as the best possible candidate for a pilot slot in the United States military.
