If you’ve been keeping up with the news lately, there’s been some talk about the increasing threat of North Korea, the presence of one of our carrier groups (the USS Carl Vinson and support ships) and the possibility of a preemptive strike.
In case you are wondering what that is, a preemptive strike is an attack that is launched with the intention of countering an anticipated enemy offensive. What that basically means is that we have reason to suspect that North Korea may want to attack US, so we’re showing them that’s NOT a good idea.
I’ve talked a lot about how power projection and how it has saved the United States from having to go to war more times than anyone can count. But a preemptive strike is SIGNIFICANTLY different from that, since it entails having to actually launch an attack to prevent an attack.
It’s pretty tricky business. And a preemptive strike should be used ONLY when every other form of conflict prevention- including power projection- has failed.
But whether a preemptive strike is a good idea for North Korea or not, it IS a good mentality to get into when pursuing your career as a fighter pilot. You will be mounting a “surprise attack” of your own in the battle to prove yourself to a selection board among the dozens of other potential candidates in the service that you choose to fly jets in. And you will have to get started right away! Preparation is the key to success in ANY kind of business- especially power projection and warfare. The services aren’t going to want people who dilly-dally around and only step up to the plate to prove themselves whenever the need arises. There are always opportunities to take the initiative and show that you have what it takes. The people who take those opportunities are the ones who become officers, leaders, and fighter pilots in the United States military. The services want those people! They want YOU!
