First off, let’s get one thing straight:
You don’t have to be superhuman to be a fighter pilot!
For starters, NO ONE is superhuman. No one is in absolutely perfect health. Even the healthiest people are off on something!
Take me for example; I’m not a perfect human specimen. I have allergies. I had hay fever when I was 12. Heck, I’d had surgery on both my shoulder and my knee. I remember thinking that I was pretty much going to out for any one of those things!
Turns out it’s not true. Even when I made it past that physical and was on to primary flight training, I still didn’t think I was out of the woods just yet. I’d neglected to mention that I had gotten motion sickness on a fishing boat years before, and when I went up in an airplane for the very first hop of my flight training, I got that same feeling of motion sickness. I thought, “Oh, boy! This will really keep me out of the cockpit of an F-18 if I can’t even hack it in a two-seat single-engine prop like a Cessna.” It turns out that a lot of the time, like in my case; motion sickness is really just the body’s way of reacting to a new environment. That first flight was the only one that I ever got sick on.
When you’re contemplating if you have what it takes physically to become a fighter pilot, it really comes down to one basic question:
“How is my condition going to affect my ability to fly a fighter and carry out the mission?”
That’s it! That’s the question you should ask about any health-related issue, whether it’s a past sickness, surgery, broken bones, or even just weight issues.
The Afterburner Club is here to show just how your condition relates to your ability to fly a fighter jet. You will find out which conditions are disqualifying ad which ones aren’t.
And you will be SHOCKED to learn just how feasible it really is to get around a condition that is disqualifying! There are people flying jets today who have had a variety of supposedly disqualifying conditions ranging from heart trouble to cancer!
