The hands-down number one dream of a lifetime for a fighter pilot is to fight an enemy fighter. And the only thing better than that…is to fight one, and WIN!

I have done both.

Now, before you go off thinking that I’m about to divulge some deeply hidden government secret about an air battle that “never happened” over some country that “doesn’t exist”, I should tell you that while the battle was between two real airplanes in real-life air, we were both using simulated missiles. The loser didn’t “blow up!” The only thing at stake that day was bragging rights. We were training- but the stakes were just as high as though it were the real thing.

My opponent was a German pilot flying a Russian-made Mig-29 Fulcrum and was the commanding officer of his squadron with almost 20 years under his belt. I was a young pilot with about TWO years’ experience in an F/A-18 Hornet. Add to that, his airplane had a superior turn performance and better missiles. I was at a huge disadvantage!

But guess what…

I WON that engagement!

How? By doing what I was trained to do. Play a game of aerial chess- move and counter-move, thinking ahead of my opponent, anticipating his moves and acting accordingly.

You may feel that you are at a disadvantage right now against the hoard of other candidates for that jet slot that you want so badly and they may be better qualified than you. But I am here to tell you, if I could beat a superior opponent in the air with a superior airplane, you can definitely make your way into that jet slot of your dreams, even against candidates who are “better qualified” than you.

And the human beings who succeed in achieving their dreams are the ones who get the right information and implement it! They take action, anticipate what their opponent might be doing, and then act accordingly.
