When we look at “negatives” and “positives” as we look at our options to achieve our goals, we need to be careful. Because negatives and positives are really just things that we subjectively label, and it isn’t always accurate.
When a friend of mine from the Navy strike community (also an F-18 pilot) talked about his road that led him to the Navy, I was actually shocked to learn that he had actually been rejected by the Air Force before. He had initially saw this as a “negative” because he thought that his career plans were over. He had no idea that the Navy and the Marines also flew jet fighters though, and when someone pointed out to him that the Navy was actively seeking pilot candidates, he submitted his application packet immediately…and GOT IN! He went on to a great career flying A-6 Intruders, A-7 Corsairs, and eventually F/A-18 Hornets off of the deck of aircraft carriers, a whole world that he didn’t even know EXISTED when he was growing up.
Now, he thinks of his Air Force rejection as a “positive,” because it led him down a path even greater in a service that was an even better fit for him!
When we look at the negatives and positives in our lives, we tend to look at then based on what we experience in the past, but in forming strategies for your future, you have to look forward, not backwards!
If something is TRULY negative in tactics, that means that it has actually either hurt you or helped your enemy in some way. When that happens, you don’t sit around moping about how it affected your plans, you look for another way!
